2024 Aug - Fishing on the Owyhee Reservoir (Lake Owyhee) - Lake is OPEN

The summer heat drives fish into deeper, cooler waters during the day, but the early morning and late evening hours offer exceptional fishing as fish move into shallower areas to feed.

Target Species

Owyhee Reservoir is home to a variety of fish species, making it a versatile fishing destination. In August, you can expect to encounter:

  1. Largemouth Bass: These fish are abundant and active in August. They can be found in rocky areas, submerged vegetation, and near the reservoir's many coves and inlets.

  2. Smallmouth Bass: Preferring the cooler, deeper waters, smallmouth bass are also prevalent. Look for them near rocky structures and submerged points.

  3. Crappie: These panfish are often found in schools near submerged timber and brush. August is a great time to catch crappie using small jigs and live bait.

  4. Catfish: Both channel and flathead catfish can be found in Owyhee Reservoir. They are often caught near the reservoir's inflows and along the muddy bottoms.

Fishing Tips for August

  1. Time of Day: Focus your efforts during the early morning and late evening hours when fish are more active and feeding in shallower waters. Midday can be slow due to higher water temperatures.

  2. Lure Selection: Use lures and baits that mimic the natural forage of the reservoir. For bass, consider using crankbaits, soft plastics, and spinnerbaits. For crappie, small jigs and minnows work well. Catfish can be enticed with cut bait, stink bait, and nightcrawlers.

  3. Depth Matters: As the day heats up, fish will move to deeper, cooler waters. Use your fish finder to locate these deeper spots and adjust your fishing techniques accordingly.

  4. Structure and Cover: Fish are often found near structures such as submerged trees, rocky points, and weed beds. Target these areas for the best results.

  5. Patience and Persistence: Fishing can be hit or miss, so be patient and persistent. If one spot isn't producing, don't hesitate to move around and try different areas of the reservoir.

Other Activities and Attractions

Owyhee Reservoir is not just a fishing paradise; it also offers a range of recreational activities. Boating, kayaking, and paddleboarding are popular ways to explore the reservoir. The surrounding Owyhee Canyonlands provide excellent opportunities for hiking, bird watching, and photography. With its dramatic rock formations and scenic vistas, the area is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts.
